About The Book:
Somerset County was set off from Kennebec County and incorporated on 1 March 1809. The following pages contain a list of names of individuals in the case dockets found on the digital images of probate records for Somerset County, Maine, contained online at the FamilySearch.org website.
The FamilySearch.org website has two sections of images of microfilmed records for Somerset County. Researchers need to sign in using an email address and password in order to view the images. There is no fee charged for using their site. The names contained in this book were taken from the film entitled “Maine, Somerset County, probate estate files 1809–1915” which the site indicates were from the Maine State Archives in Augusta and also says some packets are missing. These microfilms contain no indexes in each of the microfilms and consist of original wills, petitions, correspondence, etc., which actually begin in 1863 with file #A1 for David Albee and a Petition to Sell Real Estate allowed in July of 1863. The last record is for the administration of the estate of Everett M. Burbank, file #4479, in January of 1916. The other microfilmed records on their website are entitled “Probate records (Somerset County, Maine), 1810–1916”. The site indicates these are from original records at Skowhegan and Maine State Archives with most being indexed. While the site calls these original records, they appear to be images taken from original handwritten volumes which were likely entered by clerks at the time the original records were filed in the court.
