About the Book

Durham, approximately six square miles in area, is in the southeastern part of Androscoggin County, twenty-five miles from Portland. It borders Lisbon on the north, Topsham and Brunswick on the east, Pownal on the south, and Auburn and New Gloucester on the west. When the first settlers came in the 1760s, it was still part of Cumberland County. Charles Gerrish became its first permanent settler about 1763.  Records begin
about 1767.
