Maine Genealogical Society

About

Our Mission

The Maine Genealogical Society (MGS) is a non-profit charitable and educational organization. It was founded in 1976 to collect, exchange, preserve, and publish genealogical records, related documents, and information; and to promote and encourage interest and scholarship in genealogy and family history of the State of Maine. We do this work in a variety of ways. There are more than 80 titles in our Special Publications collection including vital records transcriptions for more than two dozen of Maine’s early towns, family sketches of nearly 1/2 the families enumerated across the state as part of the 1790 federal census, and various church, marriage and probate records from across the State. We support at least one major conference each September, which includes multiple tracks of learning so there is something for everyone, vendor and open discussion areas and features a well known national speaker. We also offer a smaller workshop each spring that dives into a more specific topic in greater detail.  In addition to the events of this organization, we support a number of chapters across the State which generally focus on research more localized in their area.
